Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (Laughlin Theory)
1983PhysicsCondensed Matter / Materials PhysicsTheoremfoundational
Robert Laughlin's 1983 theoretical explanation of the fractional quantum Hall effect: a many-body wavefunction describing an incompressible quantum fluid with fractionally-charged quasiparticle excitations -- the first prediction of fractional electric charge as an emergent phenomenon. Laughlin shared the 1998 Nobel Prize with Tsui and Stormer.
