Many-Body Localization

2015
PhysicsCondensed Matter / Materials PhysicsEmpirical Resultfoundational

Schreiber et al.'s 2015 experimental observation of many-body localization -- interacting fermions in a disordered (quasirandom) optical lattice failing to thermalize, preserving memory of their initial state indefinitely, in violation of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Real theoretical precedent exists back to 2006-2014 (Basko-Aleiner-Altshuler and later entanglement-growth/phenomenology papers), confirmed via OpenAlex noise test as genuine on-topic lead-up, not noise -- though multi-paper and gradual enough that this is modeled as a single node (Tier 1 SS4 Option A) rather than forced into one theory/experiment pair like this batch's other candidates.
